Creative materials
In therapy we can use a wide variety of materials, such as art materials, postcards, Native American Medicine cards, soft toys, Emotional Literacy cards, stones, shells, models, Blob Trees etc.
I invite clients to choose a stone or postcard for example to represent themselves in some way or how they're feeling. We then look at and discuss what has been selected, any symbolism for example or anything that echoes or resonates in our work.
Native American Medicine Cards
I work with these cards symbolically, in much the same way that I use other creative materials. Animal symbolism is present in many cultures and quite interesting to work with in therapy, particularly when looking at identity or aspects of the self.
I invite clients, for example, to select any number of cards that represent themselves in some way or that they can connect with or relate to. Sometimes a card has a strong pull but you may not know why. Cards can also be selected for particular emotions, our experience, or a dependency for example. We explore each card chosen.
These cards can be quite powerful in conjunction with our other work, tapping into the unconscious. They bring another dimension to our work and can enable more connections and a deeper exploration. I find that many clients really enjoy working with these cards and other creative materials.
